Plate No. 49 from the series Los Caprichos (The Caprices). The existence of goblins was debated with grotesque seriousness in Goya’s time. Here, two are dressed in the cowls of friars, the third in the black garb of a priest. According to the commentary in the Biblioteca Nacional, these goblins represent the avarice of the clergy, the “true hobgoblins of the world who eat and drink at our expense.”
