Description
You won’t escape…from the demons that chase you. The young dancer in the foreground seems to run from some intrusive winged creatures that persecute her. Her head turns innocently to her chasers, who seem to whisper in her ear what they expect from her or what she can expect from them once they get hold of her. Most alarming is the bird-like creature that hovers above them all, which certainly won’t let her escape and will be her destiny sooner or later. Speaking of escape, is she really trying to run away? With her feet in a pointed position and her body gracefully turned, it looks rather like a dance than a hasty run and her chasers form part of the performance. But let’s not be too quick in judging her. Maybe she simply accepted her destiny, one that she won’t escape anyway, and maybe in all her innocence and grace, this is her only way to face it: with innocence and grace. Without specifying the demons, Goya leaves room for interpretation and at the same time pictures something that is relatable to everyone. Dark and unavoidable destinies can even hit the best of us and it is not always up to us to choose better. What we can choose is how we face it and if we resort to abandon or stay true to ourselves.
