Description
Just your local parrot on a pedestal talking to a group of monks who seem to thoughtlessly consent to what the bird has to state. The parrot, which has them all lulled in his words, actually stands on top of what may previously have been his cage. Now liberated, he preaches the same words his owner must have taught him. Maybe his owner even stands among the unknowing monks, on the far right, behind the cage, watching his feathery disciple repeat his teachings. Regardless of the source of the parrot’s wisdom, we observe a scene of supposedly educated churchmen who without protest follow the discourse of an animal, praying after his words and accepting his preaching as their guidance. Goya’s open criticism of the degeneration of church and the holy preaching of his time is of alarming relevance when we think of how this all could happen: don’t we face exactly the same problem when we choose to listen to unfounded information, rarely knowing where this information came from and who shared it on social media and all the other platforms, forums and blogs out there?
